Home invaders sentenced to life imprisonment, Cambridge, EL

Acting Judge Amelia Da Silva of the Grahamstown High Court, sitting in East London handed down a hefty sentence to three men accused of, count 1: burglary, count 2: rape and count 3: robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Accused 1. Deon Mafongo (18), Accused 2. Mbongeni Simka (21) and accused 3. Sive Ntshontshwana (21).

Their sentencing follows an incident where they broke into the victim’s house where she was asleep at Cambridge, East London with her 10 year-old daughter in the early hours of 25 January 2017. They demanded money and safe keys at knifepoint.

They went on to demand her bank card and pin, one accused went to withdraw the money while others stayed behind and stood guard and they threatened to kill her.

Sentences were handed as follows:

Accused 1: count 1 – 12 month imprisonment, Count 2 – life imprisonment, Count 3 – 15 years imprisonment

Accused 2: count 1 – 12 month imprisonment, Count 2 – life imprisonment, Count 3 – 15 years imprisonment

Accused 3: count 1 – 12 month imprisonment, Count 3 – 15 years imprisonment.

Reacting to this sentence, the Mdantsane Cluster Commander, Major General Henry Vos, welcomed the achievement and was particularly impressed with the meticulous and sterling investigative efforts of the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Sandile Tongo.

“This sentence should send a clear message to would-be perpetrators that crimes against women and children will never be tolerated, we will act swiftly and harshly to anyone who commits these acts”, he warned.
