The quick and efficient reaction of Gqeberha K9 unit members resulted in the apprehension of a 25-year-old man following a shoot-out between the suspect and police.

It is alleged that at about 07:15 on the morning of Saturday, 13 November 2021, members from the Gqeberha K9 responded to a tracker signal of a vehicle that was possibly hijacked.

Members followed the signal and noticed the vehicle, a Suzuki sedan travelling in Mgonci Street, Kwanobuhle.

The driver of the Suzuki noticed the police members, fired shots at the police members and sped off at a high speed. Police members returned fire and a high speed chase ensued.

The driver of the Suzuki allegedly lost control over the vehicle and drove into a fence in Kondile Street, Kwanobuhle. The suspect (25) jumped out of the vehicle, but was successfully apprehended by the police. Members confiscated a 7.65mm pistol with several rounds. The serial number of the firearm was filed off.

The suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his lower back and was admitted to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The suspect faces charges ranging from attempted murder, possession of prohibited firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, reckless and or negligent driving and use of motor vehicle without owner’s consent (Kwadwesi case).

The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing.
