High speed chase ends in recovery of R780k worth of mandrax, Port Alfred

A high speed chase by the Port Alfred K9 unit resulted in the confiscation of R780 000-00 worth of Mandrax tablets and the arrest of two suspects.

It is alleged that on Monday 9 March 2020, at about 23:45 a high speed chase ensued between Port Alfred K9 Unit members and a blue VW Polo when the Polo travelling from the direction of East London towards Port Elizabeth on the R72, which overtook the K9 Unit members at an accelerating speed.

The members followed with flashing blue lights and blaring sirens and attempted to stop the vehicle several times but the driver maintained his speed and disregarded the police instructions to stop.

Just before a shopping mall on the R72, they managed to stop the vehicle with two male occupants. During a search of the vehicle, a large packet containing Mandrax tablets was found in the boot. The approximate street value is R780 000-00.

The suspects aged 47 and 49 were detained on a charge of possession of drugs and will appear in the Port Alfred Magistrates Court soon.

Port Alfred Cluster Commander Brigadier Morgan Govender commended the team for their vigilance and speedy response and issued this warning to offenders, “Criminals beware! You will have great difficulty to pass through our coastal town as we have an extremely committed team who work closely with all emergency services. So BEWARE and be AFRAID if you dare to pass our town with drugs,” he added.
