A 25-year-old alleged murder and attempted murder suspect was arrested on 23 March 2020, in Kamesh after evading arrest for the last three months.

It is alleged that on 14 November 2019, at about 19:15 Lorenzo Nicholas (27) was walking up Kobus Road in Helenvale when he was approached by the suspect. The suspect pulled out a firearm and started shooting at Nicholas who collapsed and died.

At the time of the murder, a 6-year-old girl was also hit by a stray bullet. It is alleged that the suspect was shooting at Nicholas when a bullet struck the child who was standing at a nearby shop in Fitchard Street.

The child later complained of a stomach ache and was taken to hospital. X-rays revealed that a bullet was lodged in her abdomen. An additional charge of attempted murder was included to the murder charge.

On Monday, 23 March 2020, at about 15:00, SAPS Kamesh Crime Prevention members responded to a shooting at a 4 way stop in their area. A Mazda Rustler was spotted with no registration plates and when the vehicle was pulled over, the driver alighted and started running. He was apprehended. The vehicle was reported stolen in Bethelsdorp in March 2020.

The 25-year-old suspect was detained on a charge of murder, attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen vehicle while his passenger (25) was detained on a charge of possession of suspected stolen vehicle. Additional charges may be added in the course of the investigation.

Both suspects are expected to appear in court soon on their respective charges.
