Hefty sentences for rapists of pregnant woman, Ugie

On the 1 July 2017 a 25 year old woman was walking alone at midnight at Bhekela location situated at Ugie area on route to go and drop a house key at her brother.

On her way back from her brother’s place she met with two unknown men who robbed her of her belongings and instructed her to accompany them to a certain house also situated in Bhekela area whereby they repeatedly raped her whilst she was 5 months pregnant.

Her pleading to leave her fell on deaf ears and they continued with their cruel deed and then fled the scene. On the following day a case of rape was registered at Ugie SAPS for further investigation, the case docket was meticulously investigated by D/Cst Masizana. Within a few days both suspects were arrested and they were further linked with DNA.

On the 28 September 2018 the case was heard at the Grahamstown High court whereby Advocate Obermeyer presented the evidence to the honourable Judge who was presiding. Both accused persons were found guilty as charged.

The sentence as follows accused No1, Luvo Gebenga on count 1, housebreaking 5 years’ Count 2, Rape 23 years imprisonment.

Accused No2, Abongile Hlahla on Count 1, housebreaking 5 years’ imprisonment. Count 2, Rape life imprisonment

The provincial Commissioner of Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga has congratulated the meticulous and professional investigation by the young female “lioness” who worked closely with the NPA which led to the lengthy prison sentence. “This sentence is the outcome of the SAPS unwavering commitment in the fight against crimes against women and children and the hard work of the investigating officer who portrays the high discipline of the organisation,” she said
