Two men aged 26 and 60 were arrested in separate incidents in Mqanduli and Mthatha CBD today, 28 September 2018.

Members from the National Intervention Unit were conducting stop and search operations in Mthatha CBD last night when they spotted a suspicious man at an Engen garage at Madeira Street today at about 00h30.

He was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm Norinco pistol with 7 rounds of ammunition. He will appear before Mthatha Magistrate’s Court soon facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. The firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used during the commission of any crime in the country.

In a separate incident, Mqanduli Visible Policing members conducted an intelligence driven operation at Newtown locality in Mqanduli in the early hours of today.

During the operation they arrested a 26 year old man for possession of 26 Mandrax tablets and an amount of R 6 620 in cash. He will appear before Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court on Monday the 1 October 2018 facing charges of possession of and dealing in drugs.

The Acting Cluster Commander Brigadier Nomawethu Makonza commended the members and said “It is through our commitment that we can bring back the community’s trust. Let’s protect our communities and bring the perpetrators of crime to book.”
