Butterworth Regional Magistrates’ Court sentenced a 35 year old man Mziwakuthi Nkomo to undergo twenty years imprisonment after he was convicted of raping an 87 year old granny. The accused was sentenced on Thursday 14 March 2019.

It is alleged that the victim was going home on the 13 January 2009 at about 20:00 at Xhaxhashimba Locality, Dyosini Village near Kei Bridge, Butterworth. While she was still walking near a certain school, she was grabbed by the accused who then raped her.

A case of rape was registered at Kei Bridge Police Station. The case was handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). The accused was traced and arrested. He was granted bail when he appeared before the Butterworth Magistrates’ Court.

He then never returned to the court again until he was re-arrested on 16 November 2018.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu welcomed the sentence handed to the accused. He praised the investigating officer for re-arresting the accused and for properly investigating the case which led to the lengthy sentence.
