Gang member sentenced to 25 years imprisonment

A 30 year old Arcadia gang member was sentenced today in the Port Elizabeth High court on charges of murder, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

Calvin Busten alias “Kalahaan” was sentenced to 25 years for murder, 5 years for illegal possession of a firearm and 1 year for illegal possession of ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently.

On 12 January 2016, the deceased, Christian Edward (27) and friends were sitting in a shack at the side of a house in Gentian Street in Arcadia Bethelsdorp when the accused stormed in by kicking open the door.

The accused asked for Edward and fatally shot him three times. Calvin Busten alias Kalahaan was arrested by the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit on 2 February 2016 at his house in Jenniker Street, Bethelsdorp. He remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.

Busten is a member of the “G-Stars” gang which is an affiliate to the “Spotbouer” gang.

Yesterday, 13 December 2016, two accused were sentenced to life plus 40 years imprisonment for the murder of Caydene Ruiters (2). On 14 December 2015 at about 07:00, Caydene Ruiters was fatally shot while she was standing in front of her house in Sagitarius Road in Helenvale. At the time, a man was engaged in a conversation in the street when the two accused started shooting at him. A stray bullet struck Ruiters in her chest. She died on her way to hospital.

Marcus Malgas (25) was arrested the same afternoon while the second accused Gregory Van Staden (30) was arrested on 14 January 2015 in Holland Park, Port Elizabeth. Both accused remained in custody until the finalization of the case. Malgas is currently serving a life plus 32 years imprisonment for previous cases of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition which he committed in October and November 2015. Both the accused are members of the 16 “Honde” gang.

They received the following sentencing on 13 December 2016: Murder – life imprisonment, attempted murder – 10 years imprisonment, attempted murder (x5)- 10 years imprisonment; illegal possession of firearm- 15 years and illegal possession of ammunition – 5 years. In effect they are sentenced to life plus 40 years in prison.
