Residents of Culunca, outside Qumbu, have accused the Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality of neglecting road infrastructure, leaving multiple bridges damaged and unusable after heavy rains.

Three key bridges, vital for connecting hundreds of villagers to schools, workplaces, and essential services, have been repeatedly destroyed, with temporary gravel repairs washing away each rainy season.

A Recurring Crisis

One bridge, described as a “lifeline” for the community, has seen its approach washed away multiple times. Earlier this year, residents protested after the structure collapsed, only for it to be patched with gravel—a fix that lasted mere days before another downpour undid the repairs.

Another bridge, completed in late 2023, had its entrance destroyed within four months. Locals have resorted to using an older, low-lying bridge, which they repaired themselves to maintain access.

“We’ve been pleading with the municipality for years,” said one resident. “They build bridges, but they don’t last. One was damaged the same year it was constructed.”

Municipality Responds

The Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality acknowledged the concerns, stating that an agreement had been reached with the community to reconstruct the bridges.

“The rehabilitation of the bridges has already started,” said a municipal representative. “Two bridges fall under the Department of Roads and Public Works, and one is under the municipality. Our teams are on-site to ensure repairs are done.”

The Department of Transport also confirmed it was assessing the situation. “We are sending a team to restore traffic flow and movement,” a spokesperson said. “The repeated damage to bridge approaches is a serious concern, and we are looking at long-term solutions, including extending the bridges to prevent future washaways.”

Residents Demand Action

Despite assurances, residents remain skeptical, calling for immediate and durable solutions. “The municipality is failing us,” said one community member. “We need properly constructed roads and bridges that won’t disappear with every storm.”

With the rainy season looming, the community fears further isolation if no permanent fixes are implemented soon.
