Fraud: Municipality manager appears in court

Busisiwe Mfunda (34) a manager in the Mayor’s office of Ngqushwa Local Municipality appeared in the Peddie Magistrate’s court on Thursday, 29 July 2021 for allegations of fraud.

It is alleged that Mfunda signed a memorandum as an applicant to request for procurement of goods and services for a Christmas party event during December 2019. It is further reported that after the approval, she went on to source the quotations requested from various fictitious service providers for her personal enrichment by bypassing supply chain office.

The municipal office is reported to have run at a loss of R273 583 through the wasteful expenditure due to failure to follow the proper procurement procedures.

The complaint was lodged with the East London Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team for probing which culminated in her arrest. She made a brief appearance at the Peddie Magistrate’s Court where she was released on R1000-00 bail. The matter is remanded to 1 September 2021.
