Four suspects arrested shortly after murder

On Saturday, 23 July 2016 at about 09:25, Renaldo Africa (23) was fatally shot in an alley. He sustained several gunshot wounds to his body. It is further alleged that a gold coloured VW Golf was seen speeding away from the scene.

Members performing duties under Operation Lockdown in the vicinity were immediately on the look-out for the suspected vehicle. The vehicle was spotted by the intervention team in Highfield Road. A high speed chase ensued and the suspects, in an attempt to escape the police, crashed into a private vehicle. The suspects continued driving but their vehicle was blocked off by police in Rabie Street, Korsten. Four suspects aged, 22, 23, 24 and 25 years were arrested. Police confiscated a .38 revolver and the stolen VW Golf.

All of the suspects were charged for possession of suspected stolen property and theft of motor vehicle. The VW Golf was reported stolen in Craddock in August 2014.The 22 year old suspect was also charged for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. An additional charge of murder was added against the 23 year old suspect. The 25 year old suspect was also charged for murder and reckless and/or negligent driving.

The suspects will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Monday, 25 July 2016.

The Acting Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster , Brigadier Ernie Neveling, commended the team for their swift reaction which resulted in the arrests. He added that the police will continue to clamp down on the criminal element in order to ensure the safety of citizens in these areas.
