Four of the eight suspects linked to the brutal murder of two teenagers in KwaNobuhle, Kariega, have abandoned their bail applications, while the other four—aged between 16 and 18—were released after questioning. The case has been postponed to July 30 for further investigation.
The arrests followed the grim discovery of two burnt bodies in a nearby bush, one of which was charred beyond recognition. The victims, both young girls, were allegedly known to some of the suspects, sparking outrage in the community.
Community Protests Demand Justice
Angry residents gathered outside the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court, calling for the suspects to be denied bail. Family members of the victims expressed their grief and frustration, with one aunt revealing that the alleged perpetrators lived nearby.
“It hurts. Some of these men don’t even stay two streets away from us,” she said. “She knew who did this to her. We never expected it to be someone who grew up with her. All I want is for the law to take its course—they must stay in prison, young or not.”
Fear Grips the Community
Residents voiced concerns over safety, particularly for young girls in the area. One protester condemned the suspects, saying, “They are murderers, they are rapists who have committed the worst crime. We have girl children at home, and we are worried about them.”
Eastern Cape police confirmed that the four remaining suspects abandoned bail and briefly appeared in court on Monday. The case has been postponed to July 30, while investigations continue.
