EASTERN CAPE — A tense, multi-agency search operation concluded successfully this morning when four missing POP officers were found safe and unharmed after becoming stranded in a remote stretch of the Eastern Cape.
The officers, all attached to the Public Order Policing (POP) Unit in Gqeberha, were officially located at approximately 08:30 following an intense overnight search. The team, identified as Warrant Officer Martin Fourie, Constable Lyle Fondling, Constable Azola Mgoduka, and Constable Imraan Moosa, had been deployed to maintain stability and ensure security ahead of the TransBaviaans cycling race.
The ordeal began yesterday evening while the unit was returning from their deployment. Their patrol vehicle became immobilized along the rugged Baviaanskloof route. Complicating the emergency was a complete lack of cellphone reception in the area, leaving the officers entirely cut off from emergency communications and unable to call for immediate assistance.
Forced to abandon their stuck vehicle, the four officers navigated on foot to a nearby nature reserve, where they successfully took shelter and waited out the night.
Addressing the successful recovery, Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata acted as the primary spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), expressing profound relief at the outcome.
“We are immensely relieved that our members have been found safe,” Lieutenant General Ncata stated. He emphasized that the successful rescue was the direct result of a massive collaborative effort, extending his deepest gratitude to the diverse coalition of search and rescue partners who mobilized quickly.
According to Ncata, the swift response and seamless cooperation of multiple agencies made all the difference. He specifically thanked SAPS personnel from neighboring stations who worked tirelessly through the night, alongside the humanitarian organization Gift of the Givers, local farmers, private security companies operating in the area, and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
Following their night in the wilderness, all four members of the POP unit remain completely unharmed and are currently being attended to by medical and administrative personnel.
The SAPS has formally released a statement thanking the public, partnering organizations, and the media for their overwhelming support and concern during the brief but intense disappearance.
