The South African Police Service in Despatch are investigating an inquest after five members of a family died after their informal home allegedly burned down at about 20:30 on Tuesday, 28 May 2019.

The family resided in an informal home in a new area called Bayland that is situated next to the R75, outside Despatch. The Police and the Fire Department were summoned to the scene where the home was engulfed in flames. It was reported by a neighbour that a mother (34) and her four children, three boys 13, 6 and 3 years old and an 11 month old baby girl were residing at the premises.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage and it is under investigation. The names of the victims will only be released once their next-of-kin was informed.

The acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll expressed his sincere condolences towards the family for their immense loss.
