Five ATM bombing suspects appeared in Eastern Cape court

PORT ELIZABETH – Five suspects appeared in the Ngqamakhwe magistrate’s court in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday for allegedly bombing an ATM.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali said that three of the suspects abandoned their bid for bail and two others were expected to apply for bail on June 26.

Tyali said the men were arrested in East London for being in possession of explosives.

The men who made their first court appearance on May 3 are aged between 32 and 57 years old. They allegedly used explosives to blow up an ATM machine last month in Ngqamakhwe near Butterworth.

Tyali said that at the time of the alleged crime, the suspects fled with R156,000. He said there was a possibility of more money being recovered by police.

He said three of the men hailed from Gauteng, one suspect was from the Eastern Cape and another a foreign national from Botswana.

The suspects are facing charges of theft, malicious damage to property and endangering property by causing an explosion.

All five accused remain in custody.
