The confiscation of illegal firearms and ammunition contributes positively in reducing serious and violent crimes. Since Thursday 21 February 2019, police have confiscated 8 firearms and arrested 6 people in separate incidents for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The latest arrest was effected on Monday 25 February 2019, at about 15:00 when members of Mount Road Cluster Operational Command Centre (OCC) followed up on information received of firearms at a house in St Jude Street in Extension 28 in Bethelsdorp.

Two revolvers were found in the bedroom and a 35 year old male was arrested and detained. One firearm was reported stolen in Humewood in June 2018 and the other firearm, the serial number has been filed off.

He is expected to appear in court soon.

Mount Road Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Patekile urges the community to continue to work with the police and ‘together we can rid our areas of criminal elements. The confiscation of these firearms and the arrest of the suspects is an indication that the police is serious on creating a safe and secure environment for the people in the northern areas of Port Elizabeth.’
