Overloading school children in taxis is one of the major factors leading to tragedy and serious accidents. Authorities in the Nelson Mandela Metro is clamping down on drivers in order to prevent overloading.

This morning, 6 February 2018 at about 07:00, SAPS Kwadwesi members stopped a Quantum taxi in the area and found that instead of the normal 15 seater passenger requirement, 50 children were squashed into the taxi.

The driver (33) was arrested on the spot and detained for violating the Road Traffic Act 93/1996 – Overloading. The taxi was impounded.

He will appear in the New Brighton magistrates’ court on 7 February 2018.

Police are urging parents to make sure that their children arrive alive at school and not to place their lives at risk by sending them in overloaded taxis.
