Possible taxi war was averted on the afternoon of 14 December 2020, through Safer Festive Season Operations which continue to tighten the grip against criminal activities in the Province.
It is alleged that information was received that members from one Taxi Association were planning to attack the combis of the competitor Taxi Association that are loading from Pinetown (KwaZulu-Natal) to Lusikisiki (Eastern Cape).
The information was followed up and the monitoring of the movements of those alleged to be involved resumed until confirmation was received that the alleged hitmen arrived in the Eastern Cape from KwaZulu-Natal.
A multi-disciplinary operation including Lusikisiki POP members and Mbizana SAPS members was conducted at Magusheni, near Bizana. Upon searching the alleged hitmen, nine (9) firearms were found but all the firearms were licensed. They were instructed to move from Magusheni and they complied.
Police will continue to monitor and intensify the patrols in the area.
“We know the devastation brought about by taxi war and police will continue to monitor that area to ensure that vehicles are moving freely and peacefully”, said Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga.
“We also commend all the members who were part of the operation that averted the possible bloodshed in the area”, she added.
