EASTERN CAPE — A fatal police shootout in Gqeberha has ended in the deaths of three alleged suspects following an early morning gunfight with members of the National Intervention Unit. The deadly confrontation unfolded in the Nyamazana Informal Settlement, located in Kwadwesi, as officers acted on intelligence regarding a wanted individual.

The sequence of events began at approximately 06:00 on Wednesday, 22 July 2026. Officers were tracking a suspect linked to a murder case that had occurred in the Kwadwesi area in June 2026. Upon reaching the targeted residence during their initial visit, the suspect was not present, prompting the tactical team to leave the area.

However, while en route to the Kwadwesi Police Station, law enforcement received updated intelligence indicating the suspect had returned to the house. The unit turned back, but the situation quickly escalated as they approached the property. According to a spokesperson for the National Intervention Unit, the suspects opened fire on the arriving officers, who subsequently returned fire to defend themselves.

The heavy exchange of gunfire left three men fatally wounded, and they were declared deceased at the scene. No police officers sustained injuries during the clash.

Following the incident, a police spokesperson confirmed that investigators recovered two unlicensed pistols and ammunition from the scene. These firearms have been seized and are now slated for ballistic testing to determine if they were utilized in other criminal activities.

In accordance with standard procedures for incidents involving fatal police action, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was dispatched to the location. An IPID spokesperson confirmed that the independent watchdog has secured the scene and will conduct a thorough, impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
