Swift response by SAPS ensured the swift arrests of two suspects after a farm attack and house robbery took place on a farm in Alexandria. A third suspect was killed during a shooting incident with police.

This followed after a farm in Alexandria was robbed by three male suspects between 02:30 and 04:30. Two elderly women, aged 72 and 76, were tied up by the three males who were armed with knives. It is suspected they gained entrance by breaking open a window while the elderly women were asleep.

Various items were taken from the farm which included a 38 special revolver, and the suspects then fled the scene with a white Isuzu Bakkie belonging to the women.

At about 05:50 the vehicle was spotted by SAPS Flying Squad members driving on the R335 close to Motherwell. A short vehicle chase ensued which ended in Siqwane Street, NU11, Motherwell when the driver of the vehicle almost drove into the wall of a house.

A confrontation with police led to a shooting incident when the driver of the bakkie jumped out of the vehicle. He was fatally wounded in the incident while the other two suspects in the vehicle was arrested. A toy gun was found close to the driver, a 35 year old male who cannot be identified until his next of kin has been officially informed.

The two suspects, aged 37 and 50, are due to appear before the Alexandria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 31 January 2019, to face charges of house robbery, and possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property.

Additional charges may still be added.
