Eskom copper cable thieves handed hefty sentences, Cradock

On 7 September 2019 while visible police members were performing night shift duties and patrolling in Nxenye Street in the Lingelihle locality of Cradock, they stopped next to two suspicious looking males standing next to a lamp pole.

On further investigation a piece of cut copper cable and pliers were found in the suspect’s possession and they were arrested. The estimated street value of the Eskom copper cable is R4000-00.

On Thursday, 18 November 2021 Cradock Magistrates’ Court found both the 20 and 24-year-old, male accused guilty of:

Charge 1: Theft of Eskom copper cable, and
Charge 2: Damage to essential infrastructure

Both accused was sentence to 10 years imprisonment on each respective charge.

The Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Magqashela welcomed this sentence handed down. She also said that the theft of non-ferrous metal and the detrimental effect that this has on the economy and infrastructure has remain a priority focus area of the police.
