An elderly 64 year old man chased after two robbery suspects and managed to apprehend one of them. It is alleged that on 6 March 2019, at about 11:30 the complainant (28) was serving two customers at his spaza shop in Harker Crescent Ext 22 in Bethelsdorp when one of them pulled out a firearm.

They then demanded for the gate keys. They unlocked the gate and entered on the other side of the counter. Cigarettes, cash and a cellphone was taken. An elderly man residing nearby witnessed the suspects running from the shop and chased after them. He apprehended a 16 year old teenager.

The cigarettes, a toy gun and some cash were recovered. The youth will be detained on a charge of business robbery and will appear in court soon.

Mount Road Cluster Commander, Major General Thembisile Patekile commended the elderly man for his vigilance and brave stance against the suspects. ‘As a community, we need to look out for each other and stand together against crime and criminals within our communities,’ commented Major General Patekile.
