Child abuse, rape, sexual offenses and domestic violence are amongst the most destructive experiences affecting women and children.

The occurrence of such violent crime takes a huge toll on the lives of victims. Thorough investigations by a team of dedicated investigating officers attached to the Uitenhage Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit (FCS) in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority, proved to be effective during July 2018, when perpetrators were sentenced effectively on three different rape cases in the Uitenhage Cluster.

On Tuesday, 24 July 2018, 30 year old Thamsanqa Daba, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for the rape of a 54 year old victim. The complainant was asleep in her home in the Kamesh area at 2:15 am on 1 July 2015, when she was woken up by the accused who held a knife against her neck and demanded money. The accused took a SASSA card and he then raped her.

The victim gave a comprehensive description of the accused and he was arrested on 14 September 2015. The accused was sentenced by the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court.

Mziyanda Qengqani, 25 years old, was sentenced to eight years imprisonment on Monday, 16 July 2018, for the rape of an 18 year old female on 2 January 2017 at about 18:30pm in KwaNobuhle. The accused entered the home of the complainant, who was alone at home at the time where she was raped. Qengqani was arrested on the same evening and was detained on the charge of rape. The accused was also sentenced by the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court.

Vusani Nkosana, 29 years old was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on Friday, 6 July 2018 for the rape of a 22 year old victim on 4 January 2014 at 2:00 am. The complainant was walking home when she was accosted by the accused and dragged to the dumping site in Moses Mabida, Kirkwood where she was raped.

The accused was arrested on the 9th of January 2014 and was effectively sentenced by the Kirkwood Magistrate’s Court.

The acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll welcomed the sentences and commended the team for their comprehensive work which led to the convictions and effective sentencing by the Uitenhage and Kirkwood Magistrate’s Courts.
