Dutywa police arrested three suspected armed robbers shortly after a robbery at a shop in the town on Saturday afternoon, Eastern Cape police said.

“The trio, all males, pretended to be queuing for payment at a local butchery. Initially they were four in number,” Captain Jackson Manatha said on Sunday.

“Once they reached the teller, they produced knives and forcefully robbed [the teller of] an undisclosed amount of money. Police were alerted about the robbery. A chase ensued and the three suspects, aged 18, 22, and 24, were all arrested. The fourth suspect managed to flee with the money.”

The alleged robbers had been charged with robbery and would appear in the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Police were still looking for the fourth suspect, Manatha said.
