NGCOBO – A 62-year-old Eastern Cape police shooting suspect is set to appear at the Ngcobo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August 2026, to answer to attempted murder charges, alongside allegations of attacking law enforcement and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The apprehension occurred on 21 August 2026 at approximately 22:15 in the Kuntsimbini Locality, situated within the Qulunqu Administration area of Ngcobo. According to the Mthatha Public Order Police (POP) and Provincial Crime Intelligence (CI), this joint, intelligence-driven raid was launched in direct response to an elevated incidence of stock theft plaguing the local community.

Upon reaching the targeted residence, officers reportedly announced their presence and sought authorization to enter the premises. Instead of complying, the suspect allegedly initiated gunfire from within the home. The confrontation escalated when the individual opened a burglar-proof door and directed additional shots at the responding law enforcement personnel.

One police official narrowly escaped a life-threatening injury during the exchange. A discharged round impacted the officer’s shoulder region, but a worn ballistic vest successfully absorbed the blow, preventing any physical harm.

Once the scene was secured, a thorough search of the property yielded critical evidence. Authorities confiscated a 9mm pistol with a fully intact serial number, a black holster, a single projectile, one 9mm cartridge, and an additional 12 rounds of ammunition. The 62-year-old individual was taken into custody immediately at the scene and remains detained pending the formal court proceedings.
