Eastern Cape Education MEC Fundile Gade has called for a realignment of the province’s education system to better address socio-economic challenges, particularly in rural areas.

Speaking at the 2nd Rural Education Partnerships Conference in East London, Gade emphasized the need to reshape the basic education curriculum to equip learners with practical skills for self-sustainability and job creation.

Challenges in Rural Schools

Many schools in the Eastern Cape’s rural regions face infrastructure shortages, lack of resources, and teacher deficits. The conference seeks to mobilize additional funding from public and private sectors to tackle these issues.

Gade highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in developing sustainable solutions to curb rural-urban migration.

“We have a successful partnership with NGOs, NPOs, and international investors, particularly in agriculture and food production,” he said. “Our goals include community development in ocean economy sectors, food security, and technical vocational skills training—all part of diversifying the curriculum.”

Focus on Youth and Literacy

Despite national unemployment concerns, Gade pointed to the untapped potential of rural youth, who can drive innovation in education.

“Structured literacy and numeracy programs have shown how dynamic young people can transform learning in schools,” he said. “We see immense opportunities not just for rural youth but for their communities as well.”

Next Steps

The conference concludes on Thursday, with resolutions expected to be tabled for implementation. Key focus areas include:

  • Curriculum diversification to include agricultural and vocational training.

  • Increased investment in rural school infrastructure.

  • Public-private collaborations to boost skills development.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education hopes these measures will reduce youth unemployment and stimulate rural economic growth.
