East London Magistrate’s Court convicted and sentenced Franklin Ndubuisi Onyeukwu (29) on 22 June 2022 for numerous counts of dealing and possession of drugs.

The South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) of East London based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks in a joint operation with East London Crime Intelligence Gathering embarked on an operation after receiving information about a group of suspects selling tik and cocaine in the East London area.

The operation was conducted and purchases of drugs to the value of R6900-00 were transacted.

During the take down on 28 September 2021, Onyeukwu was arrested with 45 grams of tik and 5 grams of cocaine to the estimated street value of R10 000-00 and cash to the value of R2600-00 in his possession.

He was subsequently released on bail.

Onyeukwu, after a series of court appearances, was ultimately convicted and sentenced by East London Magistrate’s court on 22 June 2022. He was fined R15 000-00 or undergo five years direct imprisonment. In addition a further five years wholly suspended provided he does not engage in the same offence again.

The Acting Provincial Head, Brigadier Selina Maponya commended the team following the massive drug discovery only last week in the same area. She reiterates that there is hope for a clean society if all criminal elements can be eradicated.
