Police in Port Elizabeth recovered a hijacked vehicle within an hour after the e-hailing taxi driver was hijacked in Newton Park on the night of 13 January 2021.

It is alleged that at about 19:45, as the 21-year-old complainant, dropped off a client in Hudson Street and while still busy with the person, a white Renault Megane stopped next to him. Four unknown males approached his vehicle and demanded his cellphone. They took his cellphone, a bag and the customer’s cash. They drove off and seconds later made a U-turn and returned demanding the keys to his blue Suzuki Celerio vehicle.

The tracker in the vehicle was activated and at about 20:30, the District Crime Combating Unit found both vehicles parked outside a house in Gumede Street in Kwadwesi.

A suspect was seen running away from the mentioned address and was apprehended in the street. As he ran, he dropped a firearm (toygun) on the road. The complainant’s property was also found inside the Renault Megane.

The suspect is detained on charges of robbery and carjacking and is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court soon.
