Drugs and guns: Police focus on 'hot spot' areas in PE

Police visibility in hot spot areas most certainly contributes to public safety and enhances the public’s confidence in the police.

During the early hours of Tuesday morning, 16 June 2020 at about 00:30, while members of Public Order Policing (POP) Unit were busy with stop and search operations in Daku Street in Kwazakele, they heard the sound of a gunshot.

Soon after that, they spotted a maroon Suzuki Celerio with five occupants. The vehicle was stopped and searched. A CZ 9mm pistol (serial number filed off) and five rounds of ammunition was found in the vehicle. All five occupants (3 males and 2 females), aged between 21 and 28 were arrested and detained on a charge of prohibited possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and discharging of firearm in a built up area. The vehicle was also impounded for further investigation.

The suspects will appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 17 June 2020. The firearm will be sent to ballistics for analysis.

In another unrelated incident, it is alleged that on Monday, 15 June 2020 at about 21: 15, Public Order Policing members searched a house in Mdani Street in Zwide after receiving information about drugs at the house. A total of 75 dagga cigarettes, 3 clear plastic bags containing tik weighing 15 grams, 7 envelopes containing dagga and 2 plastic bags containing loose dagga were confiscated. The total estimated value of the drugs is R10 000.

A 38-year-old man was arrested and will appear in court on Wednesday, 17 June 2020 on a charge of dealing in drugs.
