A 42-year-old suspect was arrested in an intelligence driven operation by Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team, Gauteng Crime Intelligence Gathering and Hillbrow Flying Squad on 5 August 2021 for corruption and was transported to the Eastern Cape, the following day.

His alleged accomplice, a 41-year-old investigating officer was arrested on 8 August 2021 and they were both detained in a police station in East London.

It is alleged that in 2018, the detective who was stationed at the Provincial Commissioner’s Organised Crime Unit at the time was assigned a docket of possession of drugs.

The information was received by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team that the detective as the investigator, was paid an amount of R5000 by the suspect. The money was allegedly deposited at a Shoprite in Gauteng and withdrawn from the East London Shoprite.

It is further alleged that the case against the suspect was withdrawn at court due to non availability of witnesses who were conveniently and deliberately not subpoenaed on numerous occasions. The Hawks team investigated and confirmed the allegations.

The duo is expected to make its first appearance at the Mdantsane Magistrates’ Court on 10 August 2021.
