A couple employed at St. Elizabeth Hospital were fatally shot in their home in Dick Location on Wednesday evening, May 21, in what police are investigating as a targeted double murder.
Horrific Home Invasion
According to police reports, the husband, 41, had just arrived home in his vehicle when two armed men wearing balaclavas confronted him at gunpoint. The assailants allegedly demanded to see his wife, a 39-year-old professional nurse at the hospital. Once inside the house, the men called for the wife, and when she emerged from the bedroom, they opened fire, killing both before fleeing the scene.
A female domestic worker present during the attack was unharmed. Eastern Cape police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, with seasoned detectives assigned to the case.
Community and Colleagues in Shock
The couple, described as dedicated health workers—she a nurse and he a hospital HR manager—were well-respected at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Colleagues expressed devastation, with one staff member stating, “We were shocked to hear the news this morning. Crime like this keeps happening in Lusikisiki, and no one is stopping it. We appeal to the government to intervene.”
Eastern Cape Health MEC Nomakhosazana Taba condemned the killings, noting rising violence against healthcare workers. The tragedy follows the recent murder of an EMS employee earlier this week.
Ongoing Violence in the Region
Lusikisiki has seen a spike in violent crimes. In March, a nurse, her mother, and sister were brutally killed. Last September, 18 people were massacred while preparing for a traditional ceremony in the same area.
