It is alleged that at about 12:00, the complainant (38) was offloading the groceries for his shop in Mgwangqa Street in NU6 in Motherwell when a silver Opel Corsa bakkie with no registration plates stopped next to him. Gqeberha K9 members and SAPS Kwadwesi members also assisted the detectives in searching for the outstanding suspects as well as firearms.

Most of the stolen items (boxes of chicken, polony and chips) were recovered. Both vehicles were also seized for further investigation. The stolen items were handed back to the complainant.

The suspects aged between 28 and 34years-old were detained on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property. Additional charges may be added as the investigation unfolds. They are expected to appear in the New Brighton magistrate court on Monday, 26 July 2021. Further arrests are expected.

In another unrelated incident, another shop owner (42) was held at gunpoint and robbed at his shop in Townsend Avenue in Westering yesterday afternoon, 23 July 2021. It is alleged that three unknown men entered and threatened him with a firearm. Cash and cartons of cigarettes with an estimated value of R30 000-00 were taken. Police are investigating a case of armed robbery.

NMB District Detective Commander, Brig Luntu Ngubelanga commended his team for the speedy arrests and recoveries. ‘The detective members were performing special operations on the prevention of lootings in the metro with special focus on business robberies at malls and spaza shops in the hotspot areas. We are urging the community to refrain from buying stolen property. If found buying stolen property, you will be arrested and charged. We are also appealing to the communities to report any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood. Business owners are advised to install CCTV cameras in their shops as well as outside. In so doing, you can monitor any suspicious vehicles or persons that are parked outside and alert the necessary authorities. It has been noticed that entrances to many shops are obscured from the view from inside and shop owners are taken by surprise by armed robbers. This CCTV footage also assist police in identifying suspects and linking them to other crimes,’ stated Brig Ngubelanga.
