Instead of the Department of Health making use of their own legal staff, more than R94 million has been spent on private law firms dealing with their legal issues.
In most cases it was medical claims that arose as a result of negligence.
According to reports, one attorney has handled 300 cases, which seems impossible, while there are cases where the department paid out excessive rates for assistance with cases.
The disastrous approach to dealing with these matters appears to be mostly prevalent in the Eastern Cape.
