On 19 January 2020, at about 16:30 a traffic officer was busy with his routine stop and search duties on the R56 road between Molteno and Steynsburg when he stopped a taxi.

The taxi was initially stopped for overloading but on closer inspection he noticed a bucket covered with a blanket between the passenger’s seats. He then decided to contact the SAPS as the situation looked very suspicious to him.

The owner was then taken to the police station and on closer investigation, the bucket alleged to have been full of rice, was opened and emptied just to find a black bag containing loose dagga at the bottom of the bucket.

The 24 year old suspect was arrested for possession of dagga with a weight of 4,140 kg and a street value of R 4140-00.

The acting Cluster Commander, Colonel Chris Wright mentioned that the good working relations between the traffic officer and his colleagues at the SAPS contributed to the success. It is also a clear message that dagga will not just move between our small towns unnoticed.
