Corrupt councillors sell RDP house, appear for fraud

Two Councillors from Walter Sisulu Municipality appeared on Tuesday 22 May 2018, before the Aliwal North Magistrate court for allegedly selling an RDP house to a member of the public for just over R150 thousand.

Mxolisi Mdumisa (37) and Moahlodi Mokhoabane (54) appeared before court after they were arrested during the same day by the Serious Commercial Crime unit of the Hawks. They are accused of Fraud and Theft.

It is alleged that during April 2017 Mdumisa and Mokhoabane deceived a 38 year old woman by agreeing to sell to her an RDP house in exchange for just over R150 thousand. During May 2017, the woman allegedly deposited the amount into their bank account but never received the house.

The two accused were each granted R1000 bail and their next court appearance will be on 12 June 2018.

The Eastern Cape Acting Provincial Head for the Directorate For Priority Crime Investigation, Major-General Zintle Mnonopi, commended the investigating team and warned that Fraud, Theft, Corruption by municipal officials would be dealt with severely.
