EASTERN CAPE — A 23-year-old Cofimvaba random shooting suspect is scheduled to appear before the Komani Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday, 23 July 2026, facing formal charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The apprehension follows a targeted, intelligence-driven law enforcement operation aimed at addressing community fears over alleged random gunfire in the area.
On Tuesday, 21 July 2026, at approximately 12:00, authorities received credible intelligence indicating that the suspect was traveling from Maya Locality in Cofimvaba to Komani while in possession of a firearm. Prior reports had highlighted that local residents were living in fear due to alleged random shootings attributed to the individual.
In direct response to this threat, a multidisciplinary task team comprising members of the Komani Flying Squad, the Dog Unit (K9), and Crime Intelligence was mobilized. The joint operation successfully intercepted the suspect. Upon apprehension and subsequent search, he was found to be in possession of an unlicensed Norinco firearm and associated ammunition.
Following the initial arrest, the joint team escorted the suspect to his homestead. A search of the premises led to the confiscation of a second unlicensed weapon, identified as a Taurus firearm, along with additional ammunition. Both seized firearms have been officially logged as exhibits. They will now undergo further forensic investigation to determine any potential links to prior criminal activities in the region.
District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph commended the collaborative effort of the participating law enforcement units. He lauded the joint team for its swift response and the positive outcomes of the operation, which successfully removed dangerous weapons from the community and ensured the suspect’s prompt apprehension.
The suspect remains in custody and will make his first formal appearance at the Komani Magistrate’s Court later today to face the charges.
