Centane rapist sentenced 26 years imprisonment

Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court that was sitting at Centane sentenced a 38 year old man Msindisi Sonamzi to undergo 26 years imprisonment. The accused was sentenced on Tuesday, 28 May 2019.

It is alleged that the accused went to the residence of the 21 year old woman who was student at Kobonqaba Locality, Nombanjane Village, Centane. The victim was sleeping alone at about 21:30. The accused dragged the victim to a nearby forest where he assaulted and raped the victim.

A case of rape was registered at Centane Police Station. The case was handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). The case was properly and professionally investigated as the victim did not know the suspect.

The accused was traced and finally arrested on 24 February 2018.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu congratulated and applauded the investigating officer for cracking the case. He also welcomed the sentence handed to the accused by the court.
