Ayabonga Nomyayi (28), who was a wanted suspect, appeared in Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on 24 November 2023 for theft of motor vehicle. Nomyayi was arrested in the early hours of the morning on 23 November 2023 at Mthatha by the multi-disciplinary team.

The multi-disciplinary team consists of Cash-In-Transit Task Team of Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks, Tactical Response Team (TRT), Crime Intelligence (CI), Local Record Centre (LCRC) and Vehicle Crime Investigation (VCI) executed a search warrant authorised to Nomyayi’s homestead. The team proceeded to the specified residence in Mbuqe Mthatha where search was conducted. Upon searching, they recovered a silver grey Mercedes Benz that was parked inside the yard, preliminary investigation was done and discovered that the vehicle was stolen at Bityi. During that time the Nomyayi was not in the premises and through intelligence information he was traced and found at Qokolweni location. The suspect’s vehicle was tactically contained and Nomyayi was positively identified as well as arrested. The vehicle was confiscated for further investigation.

Further investigation is underway to link the suspect with other violent crimes as he is currently out on bail for cash-in-transit offence committed around Mthatha.

The matter was remanded to 01 December 2023 for formal bail application and he is remanded in custody.
