Butterworth rapist sentenced to 25 years

The Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, convicted and sentenced a 23-year-old man to 25 years imprisonment for rape, the Eastern Cape police said.

Spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said the court convicted and sentenced Zuko Mandlakhe for the rape of a 24-year-old woman.

“It alleged that the victim was called by the suspect and told her that he bought meat for braai (barbecue) and drinks for them to enjoy themselves and she must come and wait for him at bus stop on the 01 March 2015 at about 2.40pm at Ibika Township, Butterworth. The victim asked her friend to accompany her. They found the suspect with with lot of plastics. They carried the plastic to suspect’s friend where they ate and also drank alcohol,” Manatha said.

He said the woman wanted to go home at night so she could go to work the next day.

“The suspect took out the fire-arm and told them that no one is leaving or he will shoot them. The suspect called the victim’s friend outside after five minutes they heard gun shots and the suspect came in and told them that he shot her friend. He had tried to rape the friend of the victim but in vain,” he said.

“He then pointed the victim with the fire-arm and told her to come to other room and undress herself. The suspect raped the victim. He then pointed his friend with the fire-arm and ordered him to rape the victim. When they finished he fell asleep that’s when the victim got a chance to run away for help.”

The woman reported the incident to the Msobomvu police and cases of rape and pointing of fire-arm were opened.

He was found guilty of rape, robbery , possession of unlicensed fire-arm, possession of unlicensed ammunition and attempted rape.
