Brazen attack on police in Port Elizabeth

A 21 year old suspect is in police custody following the alleged attack on police on Monday, 23 January 2017. At about 14:00 in the afternoon, the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit arrested the suspect at his house in Helenvale.

He will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 26 January 2017 on a charge of attempted murder.

It is alleged that on Monday, 23 January 2017 at about 13:30 members from the Visible Gang Intervention Unit were performing duties in the Barcelona area.

While driving in Fitchard Street, they noticed three unknown men walking in the street. Two of the men were holding firearms in their hands.

As soon as they noticed the police vehicles, they started running.

A chase ensued and at the corners of Atwell and Chamois Streets, they started shooting at the police vehicle.

Several shots were fired at the police officers who retaliated. No one was injured in the incident.

A police vehicle was damaged during the shootout. Two of the suspects managed to escape through the houses.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
