The family of 12-year-old Michelle Ambraal, who was raped and murdered in Bethelsdorp last week, is struggling to come to terms with the horrific crime that has sent shockwaves through their community.

Michelle’s lifeless body was discovered just meters from her home in a dense, shrubby area—a spot locals say they had long warned authorities was a safety hazard. The young girl had last been seen alive the previous Saturday, playing with her cousins before visiting a neighbor’s house.

A Father’s Anguish

Fernando Martin, Michelle’s grieving father, recounted the harrowing moments when the family realized she was missing.

“She was supposed to come home after dinner, but when we asked around, no one had seen her,” Martin told reporter Sipha Kema. A search ensued, and the next day, community members made the devastating discovery.

“It was terrifying,” Martin said, his voice breaking. “To find your child like that… murdered, raped… no parent should go through this.”

Community Outrage and Action

The crime has sparked fury in Bethelsdorp, with residents holding a massive march to demand justice and safer neighborhoods. Children joined adults in the streets, calling for an end to violence against women and girls.

Community members also uncovered a makeshift shelter near the crime scene, raising suspicions about possible suspects. However, police have yet to make any arrests, only assuring the family that they are working on the case.

“We trust the police, but we need answers,” Martin said. “Michelle was innocent. She didn’t deserve this.”

A Call for Justice

Michelle’s mother, Bernice Ambraal, was too distraught to speak during the interview, still reeling from the trauma of losing her daughter.

As investigations continue, the family and community remain desperate for closure.

“Justice must be served—for Michelle, for us, and for every child who deserves to be safe,” Martin said.

Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward as the search for the killer intensifies.
