A cargo ship arriving in the Port of East London was granted a permit to transport 60,000 sheep to Kuwait. The Al Shuwaikh cargo ship will transport the animals on the open sea for three weeks under extremely dire conditions of little food and little water, if any at all.

Transnet port spokesman Terry Taylor confirmed that a permit was allowed to carry the thousands of animals on their way to a certain death. The Animal Protection Association (SPCA) made an urgent request to the authorities to reconsider the granting of a permit.

During a previous event in 2017, the same cargo ship transported animals, which left an average of 37 animals dead on the ship each day. A year later, in 2018, the ship also carried a load of animals, and then an average of 20 animals per day died from heat, hunger, and thirst. The animals had to spend 30 days on the ship in extremely dire conditions.

The cargo ship was built to transport livestock, but experts believe the cruel way of abuse should be prevented internationally.
