The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya commended the diligent efforts of the East London based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation (SCCI) team of the Hawks in conjunction with East London Crime Intelligence (CI) for their role in apprehending the (52) years old foreign national on charges of Road Accident Fund ( RAF) fraud and Corruption on 07 February 2024.
The investigation stems from an alleged hit and run incident that occurred at the intersection of Voortrkker Road & Emily Hobhouse Road in the Goodwood area of Cape Town in July 2011. It is reported that a minor was struck by an unidentified vehicle that fled the scene.
Subsequent to the incident, a claim was filed with the Road Accident Fund (RAF) on behalf of the minor through legal representatives based in Southernwood, East London. However, inquiries by the victim revealed discrepancies as the purported successful claim of over R2 million was allegedly deposited into a trust account of the law firm where the suspect served as the sole signatory.
The matter was ultimately reported to the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation (SCCI) team of the Hawks to conduct an intensive investigation. The investigation uncovered that the funds intended for the victim never reached her but were allegedly misappropriated by the suspect for his personal use.
The suspect was then arrested by the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation (SCCI) team of the Hawks jointly with East London Crime Intelligence and will make his first court appearance in East London Specialised Commercial Crime Court on 08 February 2024.
