Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga issued a stern warning to violent protesters in Kirkwood this evening, 5 june 2018. This comes after protesters torched at least one confirmed orchard store and three tractors were torched

On Tuesday, 5 June 2018 around 18:00, it is alleged that a group of about 200 citrus workers blocked route R336 extension leading to Moses Mabhida area, Kirkwood with stones and burning tyres. It is said that a group thereafter dispersed.

Police later received reports of attacks on orchards in the area. At this stage, no case dockets have been opened, but at least one confirmed orchard store was set alight. Three tractors were also torched. Currently, the situation is under control and being monitored by different policing units.

There is high police presence in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid driving towards Moses Mabhida area.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga has issued a stern warning to protesters. “We view these actions as opportunistic criminal elements that are going to be dealt with harshly”.
