Arrests after armed robbery foiled, East London

A 45 year old man is expected to appear before the East London Magistrate court for conspiracy to commit armed robbery. The suspect was arrested on Saturday 20 January 2019, at his farm in Mooiplaas in a joint operation by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team and the K9 unit.

His arrest is a sequel to an ongoing investigation relating to foiled robbery in July last year. It was established then that a group was planning to rob a reputable butchery in East London. Members from Serious Organised Crime Investigation acted on the information and arrested Warren Isaacs (30), Sonwabile Mafanya (43) and Patson Ngcube-Ngcobo (40) in front of the butchery.

Further investigations led to the arrest of two other suspects, Shirley Gunuza (55) and Alpercino Shearer (34) in East London on 26 July 2018.

Additionally, three vehicles which were allegedly used by the accused were seized during August 2018. A joint operation by the Hawks, the Vehicle Identification Section and Public Order Policing units revealed that the Golf, the Ford Fiesta and a Ford Ranger were all stolen and hijacked in Gauteng.

All five suspects are still in custody.
