Armed robbery foiled, 6 arrested, Steynsburg

A combined intelligence driven operation of Crime Intelligence unit of Aliwal North, Operational Command Centre , K9 unit, the Detectives of Steynsburg and Crime Intelligence unit of Queenstown foiled a planned armed robbery at Steynsburg and arrested six suspects, one female aged 43 and five males aged between 29 and 34.

The operation which yielded positive results was conducted on the afternoon, 24 May 2018.

Members of this combined intelligence driven operation followed up on information about a planned armed robbery and at about 16:00 yesterday, 24 May 2018, after further investigation six people were arrested on the road just outside Steynsburg.

It is alleged that the syndicate from Queenstown and East London was being followed by the SAPS and investigated and may also soon be linked to other carjacking and armed robbery cases.

The six suspects were arrested allegedly in possession of two vehicles Chev Aveo and VW Golf and two 9mm pistols with ammunition were during the operation and alleged to be from Queenstown.

Suspects are still in custody and will appear in court on Monday on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and other charges will be added as the investigation continues.

The Cluster Commander Brig Xakavu commended the combined forces on the success. This is also in line with our “Back To Basics “ priority of actionable crime intelligence used proactively in the prevention and investigation of crime .Criminals might target the small rural towns for their planned actions but they forget that here, the police is still a professional force to be recognised and not to be underestimated. The community can still feel safe.
