Almost R1 million worth of abalone confiscated, Walmer

The protection of marine life especially abalone from illegal poachers rest on the duty of the SAPS. On Friday, 18 May 2018 PE K9 unit received information about a suspicious bakkie in Marine Drive in Summerstrand.

The members with the assistance of a private security company held observation on the vehicle. The vehicle was stopped by police and on searching it, nothing suspicious or illegal could be found inside. The driver was allowed to leave. K9 members then combed the immediate area of where the vehicle was stopped and in nearby bushes, 15 bags of abalone were found.

The weight of the molluscs is approx. 625kg’s with a total amount of 2500 units. The estimated value is R937 500.

No arrest were made and the abalone was confiscated and will be handed over to the department of Agriculture, Forestry and Sea Fisheries.
