The East London Magistrate’s court sentenced Julius Kintu (36) on 6 December 2022 for Contravention of Medicines and Related Substances Control Act. This is subsequent to his conviction on 11 November 2022.
The East London based South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation within the Hawks in conjunction with Crime Intelligence conducted an investigation on suspects peddling Cytotec tablets to members of the community in the East London area.
Cytotec tablets are used by medical practitioners in order to induce an abortion.
Several purchases of the tablets were witnessed during the period between 21 October 2021 and 11 November 2021 wherein Kintu was ultimately arrested.
At the time of his arrest, 120 Cytotec tablets were confiscated together with cash to the value of R3250-00.
Kintu was released on bail and made a series of court appearances and was ultimately convicted on 21 October 2022.
Kintu was given a combined sentence of R8000-00 bail or 21 months direct imprisonment.
The team is lauded by the Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya for the success.
