Four firearms were recovered and one suspect arrested in two separate incidents in the Northern areas on Wednesday, 15 April 2020.

In the first incident, at about 07:50, Anti-Gang Unit members were en- route to a complaint in Extension 31 in Bethelsdorp when they noticed a group of males, known to them as gang members, walking in Blueberry Street. As the police vehicle stopped next to them, they started running.

Two firearms were tossed in a yard by the fleeing suspects. Both firearms are 9mm pistols and one is reported stolen in Durbanville in April 1993 while the serial number of the other firearm was filed off. An inquiry docket was opened for further investigation.

In the second incident, a 28-year-old suspect was arrested by SAPS Gelvandale Tracing Team members. It is alleged that at about 10:35 this morning, the members were travelling down Gail Road when they also noticed a group of males standing at the circle in Kobus Road. As the police vehicle stopped, one person started running. A 9mm pistol was tossed in a yard in Gail Road. The suspect managed to flee from police.

The members were quick to apprehend a 28-year-old suspect who dropped a 9mm pistol in front of him while still standing. The firearm was reported stolen in Bloemfontein in 2003 while ownership of the other firearm is yet to be established.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Gelvandale magistrates’ court soon on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Mount Road Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Patekile commended both teams for their diligence and intuition.
