3 dangerous criminals escape, lock police in cell, Elliotdale

Police are issuing a warning to the public following the escape of three awaiting Trial Prisoners. The suspects escaped from police custody at Elliotdale Police Station yesterday, 11 November 2017 at about 17h55.

The incident occured when two members were conducting their routine inspections. It is alleged that members were overpowered by the inmates in the cell block.

The escapees quickly disappeared while the two members were locked inside the cells and left unharmed.

An intensive search was conducted immediately last night with negative results and police are still hot on their trail. The names of the prisoners are as follows, Bonginkosi Ndevu (24) from Mkathazo Elliodale who was arrested for armed robbery that occurred in Willowvale in April 2017. Akhona Paji (25) from Khasa Elliotdale was arrested for rape and murder that occurred in April 2017 and Mziwonke Coli (32) who was arrested for armed robbery that occurred at Boxer Store in Mqanduli in November 2016.

An internal enquiry into the escape has also been launched.

Police request the community not to approach or attempt to apprehend the suspects as they are considered dangerous.
